General Information: This program is designed to help persons who are willing to admit that they are addicted to alcohol or drugs, have completed an alcohol/drug treatment program and/or involvement in in a twelve-step group, and who have been able to maintain a period of sobriety before relapsing to addictive behavior.
Philosophy: The philosophy of The Discovery Center is that addiction is a disease that is characterized by relapse. Persons that have relapsed need to be treated as having special problems that will respond to relapse prevention treatment. The Discovery Center staff will treat all clients with respect and dignity and will help them to restore their self-respect and ability to hope for the future.
Goals and Objectives: The goals and objectives of the Relapse Prevention Treatment Program are to help clients identify past problems with sobriety and learn new ways to recognize and manage a personal relapse sequence.
Program Description: The Relapse Prevention Treatment Program will consist of five phases which are described as follows:
- Stabilization: This first phase is for the clients to assess their present situation and suitability for Relapse Prevention Treatment.
- Identification: During this phase clients will be asked to review previous periods of recovery and of chemical use with the goal of discovering any misconceptions related to what actually took place. Emphasis will be placed on looking at how closely continuing care plans were followed and the amount of effort put forth in maintaining a balance in sobriety.
- Assessment: During this phase clients will be asked to identify a list of personal warning signs of relapse and to put them into order to form a Relapse Sequence. The warning sign list will be developed from the client's personal experiences with common warning signs of relapse that they can identify from past relapse episodes. The clients will be asked to identify their individual responses to the common warning signs and then develop personal warning signs that are related.
- Warning Sign Management: During this phase clients will identify critical warning signs and learn new management skills to help when warning signs become active. Clients will also identify thoughts, feelings, and actions that are related to the warning signs. Clients will identify the mandates, injunctions, and mistaken core beliefs that are associated with the identified warning signs.
- Recovery Planning: During this phase the clients will make concrete plans and apply the things that have been learned in treatment to their daily lives in such a way that they will be able to maintain a balanced recovery.
The duration of the program will be based on individual progress in accomplishing the phases outlined above. Every effort will be made to treat the needs of each individual in such a way as to provide the maximum benefit for the least cost. Emphasis will be placed on individual needs and abilities. The program is designed to be completed in approximately twenty-four sessions, and consists of a combination of individual and group sessions. The Program is based on a planned weekly schedule of one group session, and one individual session for each client. The anticipated length of the program is approximately twelve weeks based on individual progress. Clients are directed to participate in a relapse continuing-care group following the completion of treatment.
